Veil
Veil refers to a design element added to act as a semi-transparent and filtering layer — a boundary that both conceals and reveals.
With the aim of enhancing both energy efficiency and aesthetics, our practice undertook a comprehensive redesign of Alumil S.A.’s central exhibition in Acharnes, Attica, back in 2016. The alterations made to both the building envelope and the interior set a benchmark for bioclimatic architecture and showcase the company’s diverse product range.
The building’s form, strict and symmetrical, emphasizes the facade. It is dissected into a central prominent volume and two lateral volumes on a secondary level. This arrangement highlights the main entrance, hinting at the axial symmetry within the interior layout.
The redesigned envelope features modern energy-efficient glazing, allowing natural light to permeate the interior while maintaining a visual connection with the surroundings. Simultaneously, a second perforated shell intercepts part of the solar radiation, safeguarding the interior from overheating. The double-shell system operates seamlessly, significantly conserving energy for heating and cooling, all while providing glimpses of the sky and the green environment from various points within the exhibition.
The external cladding combines two distinct systems: movable shading louvers and perforated panels made of corrugated aluminum. The discreetly colored louvers adorn the lateral volumes, while the second system, successfully piloted in this project, envelops the central volume. Its purpose is to modulate natural light and create conditions of visual and thermal comfort in the exhibition’s central hall. Additionally, it serves as an excellent surface for projecting bright images during the company’s evening events.
Inside the building, a system of white and gray cubic volumes houses the exhibits. The material selection (exposed concrete, cementitious finishes, black metal, wooden flooring) aims for a minimalist aesthetic that complements the showcased products.
